Unboxing Sun City Hilton Head: Six Episodes, Plenty of Mistakes, and What We’ve Learned

Unboxing Sun City Hilton Head: Six Episodes, Plenty of Mistakes, and What We’ve Learned
My wife, Nennie, and I did not set out to become experts on Sun City Hilton Head.
That is probably a good thing, because we aren’t.
We’re still figuring it out.
I’m William “Stacy” Whitt, a REALTOR® with Engel & Völkers Bluffton | Hilton Head Island. Nennie—Stephanie when paperwork is involved—is my wife, creative partner, enthusiastic club joiner, and the person most likely to ask the question I was hoping nobody would ask because I don’t know the answer either.
Our move from the Chattanooga area to the South Carolina Lowcountry was about choosing our next chapter. I brought my engineering background and habit of solving problems. Nennie brought her camera, curiosity, love of art, and considerable enthusiasm for discovering what was around the next corner.
You can learn more about my background and approach to real estate here.
Like many people considering Sun City Hilton Head, we researched the homes, amenities, clubs, and lifestyle. But we kept coming back to questions that beautiful listing photos couldn’t answer.
What happens after you move?
How do you get through the gate? Where do your guests go? What happens when the moving truck arrives? Which building is which? And how does everyone else seem to know where they’re going?
Those questions became Unboxing Sun City, our video series about learning to live here—with a few wrong turns left in for educational purposes.
What Is Unboxing Sun City?
Unboxing Sun City is a resident-perspective video series hosted by Stacy and Nennie Whitt about moving to and living in Sun City Hilton Head. We explore arrival, gate access, resident services, community celebrations, and gathering places, sharing what we learn as newcomers.
Think of it as the conversation you might have with a neighbor who has just figured something out and wants to save you a little trouble.
Sometimes we’re several steps ahead.
Sometimes one.
And sometimes we’re sitting beside the gate in a moving truck, reconsidering our preparation.
You can follow the series on our Lowcountry Lifestyle Concierge YouTube channel.
Why We Started the Project
There is plenty of information about buying a house in Sun City. What we wanted was a better sense of what happens afterward.
An amenities list tells you there are places to swim, exercise, create, and gather. It doesn’t tell you how those places become part of your week—or how quickly your wife can fill a calendar previously considered “wide open.”
We decided to bring people along while we learned.
The discoveries. The neighbors. The practical details. The moments when we confidently did something wrong.
Our goal was to make the move feel more familiar for someone considering it, while giving current residents a reason to smile and say, “We did that, too.”
If you’re starting your own research, our Sun City Hilton Head community page is a useful companion to the series.
Episode 1: So… We Moved to Sun City
Watch Episode 1: Our Relocation Experience
The first episode introduces our move and the reason behind the series.
We wanted more than a tour of attractive houses. We wanted to understand what it felt like to become residents: arriving, finding our way, meeting people, and discovering the routines that turn an unfamiliar place into home.
So we decided to document our own experience.
Episode 1 is essentially us opening the box and saying, “Well, let’s see what’s in here.”
Our takeaway: Research the home, but also spend time imagining your everyday life in the community.
Episode 2: How Do We Get Through the Gate?
Watch Episode 2: Getting Through the Sun City Gates the First Time
Every community has a front door. Sun City has several.
Our early lesson was simple: your GPS can know where your house is without understanding which entrance you should use.
That distinction becomes surprisingly important when you’re new.
This episode explores the first layer of arrival and access: getting into the community, understanding the entrances, and learning the practical steps involved in becoming a resident.
None of it feels particularly complicated once someone explains it. Before that explanation, however, a gate can feel like a very personal rejection.
Our takeaway: Confirm your arrival instructions before setting off, especially on your first visit or moving day.
For current access procedures, use the Sun City Hilton Head Community Association website and the instructions provided by community staff.
Episode 3: Gate Passes, Moving Trucks, and Our First-Day Traffic Jam
Watch Episode 3: Your Sun City Move and Gate Passes
It turns out that “getting through the gate” deserves more than one episode.
Guests, contractors, deliveries, and moving trucks raise different questions. This episode gets into those practical details—and includes my contribution to moving-day confusion.
I arrived with our moving truck without properly arranging its access.
If you’ve ever wondered who might be sitting off to the side while everyone else carries on with their day…
Hello.
That was me.
We also discuss questions worth asking before scheduling contractors or portable storage: what access arrangements are needed, whether a vendor already has the appropriate credentials, and what community rules apply.
Nennie, meanwhile, wanted reassurance that deliveries would find us. Apparently, Amazon access belongs near the top of a relocation checklist.
I have been advised to respect this priority.
Our takeaway: Coordinate moving-day access ahead of time. Confirm current requirements and any applicable charges with the association rather than relying on an older video.
Episode 4: Palmetto Commons and the Place You Eventually Realize You Need
Watch Episode 4: Stop at Palmetto Commons First
Palmetto Commons becomes familiar quickly when you’re learning the practical side of resident life.
This episode introduces a place connected with getting settled and finding help. But one of our favorite discoveries was the Book Exchange.
Books. Puzzles. Volunteers. The kind of welcome that doesn’t require a sales presentation.
You can also watch our short video about the Sun City Book Exchange.
Somewhere along the way, we realized we had started a series about places and were increasingly telling a story about people.
The volunteers. The neighbors who explain a process. The person who sends you to the right building without making you feel foolish for starting in the wrong one.
Our takeaway: Ask questions. Learning the community gets easier when you let the community help.
Episode 5: Our First Fourth of July, Featuring Several Rookie Mistakes
Watch Episode 5: Our First Sun City July Fourth Celebration
We had a plan.
Unfortunately, we had the wrong plan.
I handled chair duty and was pleased with our selected spot. Nennie inspected it and approved. We thought we had managed this whole resident thing beautifully.
Then we returned for the celebration and discovered that our excellent location came with an abundance of direct afternoon sunshine.
In July.
In South Carolina.
Shade, it turns out, is premium real estate.
The evening still became a wonderful memory: music, dancing, neighbors, and fireworks. We also learned that leaving at the same time as everyone else requires a little patience.
For your own outdoor plans, the National Weather Service’s heat-safety resources are a useful companion to the event schedule. weather.gov
Our takeaway: Check the event instructions, consider where the afternoon sun will fall, and give yourself time to leave afterward.
You can have the wrong plan and still have a wonderful day. You can also improve next year’s plan considerably.
Episode 6: Town Square, the Heart of Sun City Hilton Head
Watch Episode 6: Town Square - The Heart of Sun City Hilton Head
By Episode 6, we were ready to explore a place we had passed through many times without fully appreciating everything happening around us: Town Square.
The episode visits four parts of community life:
- Yemassee Crafts Center: A place to explore creative interests, try something new, and discover that one hobby can lead to several more.
- Pinckney Hall: A gathering place for the meetings, programs, and social occasions that help neighbors become friends.
- Magnolia Hall: A stage for performances and community entertainment.
- Purrysburg Fitness Center and Barataria Pool: Places where movement and recreation can become part of the weekly routine.
For readers curious about the creative community, the resident All About Art Club describes its studio at Yemassee Crafts Center. AAA Club
Town Square helped us understand why an amenities tour is only the beginning. A building becomes meaningful when you have a reason to walk through its doors.
Our takeaway: Explore the places connected to your interests—and leave room for an interest you haven’t discovered yet.
What We Didn’t Understand Before Moving Here
Before moving, it’s natural to focus on the house.
Floor plans matter. Price matters. Location matters. So does deciding between new construction and resale.
But living here has made another question just as important to me:
What kind of life are you trying to build?
Would you enjoy taking a class, volunteering, swimming, making art, watching a performance, or meeting neighbors for a game?
Would you prefer a quieter routine with a few favorite activities?
Doing nothing on the porch remains an approved option.
If you’re comparing communities, my Lowcountry active-adult community guide can help you think through differences in scale, amenities, and lifestyle.
And when you’re ready to consider the financial side of a move, our Sun City Hilton Head market update adds context to the home search. Check its reporting period, since market conditions change.
Why Our Mistakes Are Staying in the Story
We could leave out the wrong turns.
But those are often the details we wish someone had shared with us.
If we misunderstand an entrance, we’ll explain what we learned. If my moving-day preparation needs improvement, you’ll hear about it. If our chairs end up baking in the afternoon sun, that lesson stays, too.
We want the series to help answer a practical question:
What is it actually like to become a resident here?
Sometimes it’s beautiful. Sometimes it’s confusing. Sometimes it’s hilarious.
Occasionally, all three before lunch.
A Lot of Sun City Left to Unbox
Every place leads to another activity. Every activity introduces us to someone with a story. Every event teaches us something we wish we’d known beforehand.
So we’ll keep exploring, asking questions, and sharing what we learn.
If you’re considering a move, I hope the series helps you picture the experience of becoming part of the community. If you already live here, tell us what we should unbox next.
Just remember: if your suggestion involves lawn chairs in July, Nennie now checks the shade.
I’ve lost that privilege.
